Everyone is familiar with this chocolate and vanilla cake, made in a zebra or marbled style, its taste reminiscent of childhood perhaps for many of us. Still a little warm, with a cup of cold milk, the zebra cake always makes for a delicious treat.

Element
Makes about 10 servings
4 eggs
1 cup (200g) sugar
1 cup butter (200 g), at room temperature
1 cup (240 ml) milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups (375g) flour
2 teaspoons (10 g) baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
For chocolate powder
3 tablespoons (25g) cocoa powder
1/4 cup (50ml) milk
1 tablespoon (15g) sugar
Direction
1. Grease and lined with parchment paper a 24 cm (9 in) round cake pan. Preheat oven to 180 (350 F).
2. Whisk together dry ingredients, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. Set aside.
3. In another bowl, mix cocoa powder with 1/4 cup milk and 1 tablespoon sugar.
4. Mix butter with sugar until creamy. Add the eggs one at a time and mix until well combined. Add vanilla extract.
5. With the mixer on low, alternately gradually add the milk and flour mixture until all are well mixed.
6. Take out two cups of flour and mix them with the chocolate mixture.
7. Use a tablespoon for each portion of dough to create layers of dough on the prepared pan. Starting in the center of the pan, take a spoonful of white flour, then add a spoonful of chocolate powder on top and repeat these steps until all the dough is gone. (If you don’t have the patience to create these layers, just add one layer of dough on top of the other and create swirls with a knife or fork for a marble effect)
8. Bake for 50-60 minutes until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
9. Remove from oven and let cool for 15 minutes on a cooling rack before removing from pan.
10. Serve original or topped with chocolate glaze.
